Question on math- involves a matrix.?
There are five students in Mr. Planck’s wood working class learning the value of courtesy. Each student was in need of a different tool that he or she had neglected to bring to class. Fortunately, another classmate was able to help out by lending each student the missing tool. From the clues, determine the tool each person lent, as well as the person to whom he or she lent it?
The names are: Chet, Melissa, Roger, Stella, and Vanessa.
The tools: Chisel, file, handsaw, plane, sander.
And then lent to: (same names)
Chet didn’t lend a tool to Vanessa (who didn’t borrow the sander)
The person to whom Melissa lent a tool lent a chisel to one of the men.
Either Melissa lent the file, or she borrowed the file.
Stella was lent a handsaw by one of her classmates.
Both Vanessa and Melissa lent tools to women.

Wow, this took me back. I don’t know about using a matrix, but this is easily solvable using a logic grid (such as http://www.puzzlersparadise.com/logicgrids/blank.gif ). By assigning the from person, the to person, and the tool to the three categories in this grid and working through the logic clues, you can obtain the following results:
Chet lent the sander to Roger
Melissa lent the handsaw to Stella
Roger lent the plane to Vanessa
Stella lent the chisel to Chet
Vanessa lent the file to Melissa
I suppose you could represent this with three matrices, if you really wanted to. Matrix A would be (from, tool) Matrix B would be (from, to), and Matrix C would be (to, tool).
