a table countertop made from thick sheet of solid wood from hardware store?

I was thinking of getting a VIKA Furuskog table countertop(from ikea: 200cmx60cm http://www.ikea.com/ca/fr/catalog/products/60103608) with some ikea’s table legs,
…but then, I started wondering if it was convenient/functional enough to use it as a working desk despite its narrow width?
And since I’m looking for a desk made out of solid wood material, I was wondering if it was a better alternative to just go to a hardware store and get a thick sheet of solid wood and have it cut in the right size (then sand and stain afterwards) but I’m not sure if it would work well as a table countertop.

The VIka Furuskog table counter top is good enough to be a working desk unless you are doing draughting and designing works.

Your other alternative will be diy, something to cater for your need. For this you need some carpentry and staining tools. But you will have the sense of fulfilment and satisfaction on accomplishment.

Butcher block counter will certainly look artistic with various kind of wood joined together, however the time and work are more extensive.
With this you need more carpentry tools and can be very messy and dusty while grinding and polishing.

So the choice between the above depend on your time schedule, technical ability, availability of all the necessary tools and working space.

My choice shall be the ready made from Ikea because I don’t have any working space to make use of in my flat.
