WOOD WORK FINISHING

how do i paint MDF wood and get a good finish?
I’m doing wood working projects and ive tried sealing the wood with primer, waterbase paint, and enamel but it sucks up the paint in raw areas but the manufacter surface comes out very well does any one have any ideas.
I used to use the Kilz-and-sand method for raw MDF edges, but came up with something that builds a smooth surface much more quickly, and hardens the layers below the surface as well. Spread a thin coat of yellow carpenter’s glue over the raw edge, so that it really soaks in. There’s not enough water in the glue to swell the MDF, but it will raise the “grain” so don’t bother sanding except to remove tool marks before applying glue (about 80 grit–not even necessary if you have sharp tools and a well-balanced table saw). Once the glue dries, you can sand the edge to a hard, smooth surface. 150g to finish is good. THEN a single coat of oil-based Kilz (the spray works great) and a light sand with 150 g (not even necessary if you’ve got a good touch with the spray can).
One last thing, and I’m kind of saying the same as the guy above, just in another way: of course MDF isn’t as nice or permanent as real wood, but let’s face it–at the rate we’re wiping out the good trees, and given how long most woodworking projects are going to stay fashionable (and out of the landfill), I think MDF is the best choice for paint-grade work. I hate using hardwood unless I think the results will be around a hundred years from now–if you don’t think your projects will live that long, wait until they will before you use the good stuff.
