WOOD WORK BOOKSHELVES

What should I do with my living room?
We just bought our first house. I am so excited- but I am struggling with what to do with our living room. It is a large room- I am planning on putting 2 couches and a love seat along some of the walls and in front of our huge window. However, my problem is this- we have beautiful wood work in our house. The floors and baseboards two different colors of wood- and then we have a ceiling to floor built in bookshelf area which is also a different color of wood. I have no idea what colors to paint the room or what to do with the shelving unit…I am willing to paint the shelves b/c we do want to knock out some shelves to put up a flat panel tv. Any suggestions on the wood or room colors? I am painting my dining room a reddish color…HELP!!
first of all, with all that great wood trim – consider floating either your couches or love seat – don’t stack them all against walls. you could tie them all together with a large area rug that has the upholstery color in it and muted beiges. no prob with mixed wood colors. now to paint color – think rich darkish “mushroom” – paint store can help. don’t let the color look too gray or pink – more just mushroom. you can tell if it’s got pink or gray in it by holding it up to red. if you can see the dining room and it flows into the living room, what about a rich deep red for the wall unit for tv. something that ties in with the dining room color. not knowing your couch colors – not sure. don’t be afraid of leaving it the wood color it is either. you can use some of the shelves for accent pieces with color in them.
