Small fiberglass row boat restoration?
I recently acquired a very small fiberglass row boat in need of restoration. Basically I have a decent mold body with rotting out gunnels— all the other wood components (if there were any) were removed before I got the boat.
I am wondering what sort of support I need to install on the boat in order to have a working fiberglass row boat.
I know I need to replace the gunnels—- but do I need to frame out the seats as well?
by replacing the gunnel’s you will be adding a lot of strength and rigidity into the boat. you can also add quarter knees to the stern and a triangle piece in the bow. as far as framing out the seats, if you frame out the bow and stern seats, you will be creating floatation in the boat. the space inside the seats can be filled with foam before you attach the seat top.
you have options with the center seat, you can box it in with cross pieces and install the seat with hinges to create a storage space, or install the seat with a center riser and attached to tabs on the side of the hull.
since its a row boat, you can create wider and longer center seat side tabs and have an adjustable seat for different size rowers.
At the very least, i recommend replacing the gunnel’s and center seat and see how the boat handles.
