WOOD WORK BENCH KITS

Have you ever rebuilt an automatic transmission?
I’m thinking about rebuilding the transmission in my chevy truck. Its an 6.5 l turbo diesel. To have it done at a shop will cost me $3000. To buy the rebuilt transmission will cost $1800, and the rebuild kit only cost $300. So my question is, how difficult of a task is this? What special equipment and tools would I need, and lastly, is this within my ability? I have changed out alternatiors, starters, fuel pumps, and small stuff like that. I would be doing the work in my driveway and on a wood work bench. Your thoughts please.

if all you’ve done is little stuff like that, i would not attempt it. I didn’t even attempt a rebuild until i had built an entire engine from the block and i was still blown away with the complexity of it. you have servos, check balls, steels, clutches, gears. If you haven’t done any major work on a car, i’d advise to stay away from that as your first big overhaul. no offense but transmissions are a whole different ball game then just changing a starter or fuel pump. and yes you will need a few special tools that will only be ever used for rebuilding it.
