WOOD WORK ALBUM
Has Mp3 and the Internet ruined the Music industry?

Will we ever have a record like MJ Thiller that sold over 20 million copys?
Never again.
I think about a small percentage of people buy records in both cd and mp3 form.
Years ago, sale sky rocketed when a quality album came out the wood work. Today, even though the audience has grown, it will would never happen.

No it has not. Some record companies believe so. But others have never experienced sales that large in the first place and they still release plenty of superb music despite not being able to have elaborate advertising campaigns and marketing strategies. I know for a fact that we music industry consultants are being paid more today than ten or twenty years ago. That being said, I don’t work with any US record labels so there may be a large difference there. We have also discovered that extensive respect for artists drives up record sales regardless of how many illegal mp3s are distributed on the internet. Therefore, we typically ask artists to keep sensitive information to themselves and avoid making scenes at shows or parties. If they do, we ask that their actions are appropriate to boost consumer respect for their values. We find that this system has been quite useful in promoting mp3 sales on websites with specialized music.

Keep in mind that you cannot go up on the decks and start spinning mp3s. The mp3 format severely degrades the quality of the sound and it is very noticeable in large clubs. Thus DJs (including so-called bedroom DJs, who aspire to play in clubs and are becoming increasingly common these days), will still purchase CDs and vinyls until it becomes efficient to share full quality wave files (and even then laptops whether PC or Mac are prone to malfunction so CDs and vinyls will probably still be used). Consequently, we believe that there will continue to be a market for CDs and vinyls although it will be a smaller one, hurting larger record labels and helping smaller labels enter the market.
