WOOD WORK LATHES
What is the best way to repair plaster walls of a room?

I just bought my dream home … it is only One year over 125 fixer and needs work. I have to repair all walls, all the old plaster and lathe. There are many cracks and crumbling walls and ceilings but on the mantel, large sections of exposed without cast back at all when the water ran through the inside of the chimney and leak. (I've talked about all leaks and put new flashing around the chimney) I have the intention to repair small cracks in plaster and will have more peices of drywall. The final texture help hide the repair. I think I'm so low and I'm pretty sure I can cope, but my question remains the preparation work and where do I start? What should I do first? I would appreciate any advice. Thanks!

In a room with a fireplace, the first thing to do is a sponge on the walls with TSP to obtain a mixture of soot (smoke) stack. You can get this job to a contractor or paint store. Just ask the TSP. Then lower the loose plaster. If you can remove fingernails, it will fall. Use 1 / 2 "gypsum wall thickness. For the large hole in the chimney to make the plaster of the 2×4 as you screw the drywall in studs. Also, if an outside wall, insulate the wall before that happens. Then, once in the forum, if the cast is even thicker, you can get sheetrock and thin tail 1 / 2 "board to the surfaces to the same level. Use a good construction adhesive. Ask the store to be sure. As for small slots, take the edge of a putty knife or a flathead screwdriver and scrape the inside of the slot so it is larger. Then use the compound joint to fill the cracks with a putty knife or 4 "putty knife (or more). (You may have to do twice (taking into account the dry clay completely) as the joint compound will decrease as the water evaporates) Plaster do too much, but the mud cake plate is easier to sand the plaster things in Paris. And under the paint anyway. If you pass the time and the sand soft block (using a variety Articles 80 to 120 grit), no texture is needed. The walls are perfect. Can not move here, do not press the issue. Once you put in mud on the morning of a day, you have to wait until the next day you can sand. One could almost say the same for a new application without sanding (depending if it is visibly moist and thick) when in doubt give it another day. more easy to check is to start sanding. If the paper gets dirty, it's too wet. This whole process is equivalent to putting on makeup and the guys know it takes a long time.
