NATURAL WOOD WORK TOPS

I effed up my coffee table! Help!?
OK, so I had these two bubbles on the top of my coffee table where I left a drink, and it’s a cheap table w some kind of faux cherry finish. Well, I was advised to put an iron on low heat on them, so I did, with a thin towel in between, and it worked, but it left an upraised rim of wrinkly flaky stain around the perimeter of where each bubble was. So I got some sand paper, and sanded it down, which worked, but left a couple of quarter sized spots where the natural wood is exposed. So I tried to stain it with some stain that I had that matched. But the stain is not soaking in or whatever. I leave it on, then wipe it off, and it’s a tad darker, but certainly not as dark as the surrounding finish. What should I do now? Please, only answer if you know about these things! Thanks.
Get a small tube of either oil or acrylic paint in a color that matches the wood. (If the wood is dark brown then the color burnt umber may be what you need. Ask at the store to see color samples) Dab or rub a thin coat on the spots. Let it dry. You may need to add more the next day. Just be careful not to apply a heavy coat. Two thin coats are better than one heavy coat. Apply only to the spots and blend in the edges of the paint with the rest of the wood.
Since you are new at this I suggest you buy a small tube of acrylic paint. It is easier to work with and dries much faster than oil. Once you have it fixed please remember to use coasters!
